american woodworking

while i can't say i've compared page-by-page an older issue to a new one, is it just me or has american woodworking been lacking something lately? my impression of their latest issue was a lot of fluff.

---------------------

- I have been an American Woodworker subscriber for a number of years and felt comfortable with the writers and editorial staff. Since RD took over, it has taken on more of the Family Handyman or wordless workshop look. Will have to finish out the current subscription period to determine what I will do in the future.

One big indication of what is to come may be the upcoming American Woodwoker Show in Ft. Washington, PA. Have gone every year since it started. Last year seemed a little strained but that was just after the RD buy out. Whole setup was under old regime. This year will be first under RD.

-Seriously, the previous issue DID seem a little off to me; but then whenever you dump an entire (experienced and integrated) magazine staff in favor of a group of equally good but not yet integrated team, you've got to expect a little drop in quality. It may be a temporary problem -- depending on how much freedom Reader's Digest gives the magazine staff to work out their own solutions. If R.D. insists, however, on micro-managing American Woodworking then the magazine will continue it downward slide rather than recovering and becoming better than ever. Too soon to tell just yet.
