any suggestions for a good book on basic woodworking skills that
would be needed for flattop/archtop construction. it could be an instrument
oriented book or otherwise. i am familiar with the Cumpiano sp? and
Benedetto books. what i'm looking for is tips on how to plane, how to shape,
scrape, carve and basic things like that.
---------------------
-David Fink's book on making planes is one I would recommend. It covers much
more than building wooden planes--it details the set-up and use of all the
tools involved in building them (bandsaws, block planes, spokeshaves,
scrapers, etc.). Amazon has some good reviews of it. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/0806961635... 22162-3623856 (cut and paste if it wraps) -I admire your courage, wanting to try (or at least consider trying) to
build a guitar without having any (or much) woodworking experience,
but you really should start out with some simpler projects as skill
builders before trying to make an acoustic guitar, which I don't
hesitate to describe as an ADVANCED woodworking project. To be perfectly honest, if you don't know how to plane, shape, scrape,
carve, and 'basic things like that', then I think you're not ready
to build an acoustic guitar. That being said, I don't use hand planes and don't need them, not
even when making archtops. I DO use the following tools: Table saw
bandsaw
router
router table
planer
jointer
thickness sander
drill press
hand chisels
rasps
files
sandpaper
carving disc on electric grinder
Heavy sanding disc on electric grinder
random orbital sander
reciprocating drum sander
air powered die grinder
scrapers I could make do without about half those tools, if I had to,
but every one of them earns its place in the shop.
