 | Design/Build my own machine(s) |
|
I have only recently discovered this group and am hoping you will
help me. I wish to build several woodworking machines relatively
simple in design (thickness planer, jointer and a bandsaw 18"-20"
diam.). I have some experience at this but find that by working
alone (by circumstance), I tend to keep 're-inventing the wheel'
and doing various things in ways that make it fairly clear that
there HAS to be a simpler and/or better way !? I have taken some
courses and this has helped somewhat but not enough to have
really helped to change things. Nearly all materials have/will
be 'off-the-shelf' from the hardware store - successfully so far.
The main reason, beyond the challenge, is quite simply because I
just cannot afford to merely go out and buy them !
I would appreciate any help with book refs., refs. to step-by-
step plans, referals to people in my area (St. Louis, Mo. or a
rational radius) that are knowledgable in this ?!

-You might try looking at the book offerings at http://www.taunton.com. I
think that there are a couple of selections that address building your own
machines. I have also seen ads in Fine Woodworking for a company that sells
plans and/or kits to build your own machines. Repost your question in
rec.woodworking. -http://www.lindsaybks.com
reprints a series of books by Dave Gingery on building a
charcoal fired furncace for aluminum castings. There are also
books on building a lathe, shaper, milling machine, drill press,
and dividing head. The books are great, and metalcasting is
easy and fun. You'll wonder how you ever built anything without
it.
