"I'm new at this too." My wife got me a tablesaw, orbital sander, and a few other toys for Christmas to go with some handheld powertools that I already had. I have built a crib (plans were in Home Woodworker mag., as well as, a simple router table that I've already built) for our 4th child that's due in August. On the crib all I have left to do is the finish sanding, stain, etc.
