Wooden toolbox..

After looking for a new toolbox for my mechanics tools, I can't believe how much money you have to spend to get decent slides and a strong toolbox. For a decent 29" wide 6' tall chest/cabinet combination you have to spend over $1000. (Kennedy, Craftsman Pro, etc). Has anyone attempted to make a wooden tool chest/cabinet this large? Any thoughts on design? I was thinking baltic birch 3/4" for everything, maybe 1/2" on the drawer bottoms. Making the drawers about 27"x18"x 2-6" deep Any thoughts?

---------------------

I have seriously considered this but the thickness of the wood as compared to the steel in the tool boxes would cut down on a lot of storage....and it would weigh as much as the tools... That said, HD has the Husky 6 footer top and bottom box and about 42" wide with nice ball bearing slides for about $999. I'm not too sure how well it would hold up loaded down with tools in a pro environment but for a home owner it should last for a looong time.. If you are using the box in an automotive shop, the washing of the floors and the water getting on the wooden box would probably not be too good.. If the prices of the boxes you have been looking at seem scary,,,, price a Snap-On Box....$3500+. for the larger ones. some of the higher end craftsman and husky starts to get better. But like I said, that is $1000. For that kind of money I would expect complete full extension ball bearing slides with a lifetime guarantee. Instead you get cheap paint that scratches, light metal that dings and another purchase 5-8 years down the road. Lets see 20x drawers, 3/4" bottom rather then 1/8". Total 15" of wood bottoms, or 2.5" of metal bottoms. Total lost space around 17-18% using wood in a 6' chest. That would require moving sides out from 29" to 34" to cover lost space. I might see if I can't track down some 1/8" metal to use as bottom inserts, thus limited space loss. Then my only issue is drawer strength. Right now I am still exploring.. but thanks for the thoughts.. I recently built a toolbox for my wood working tools from oak ply. I used a set of plans from Woodsmith, they do not have the box I built online, or I would include a link. I can get you the plan number if you want to try to find them. It is around 30 inchs wide I think. I have only built the bottom chest so far, and it is about 3 - 3 1/2 feet tall, has three large drawers and to small drawers, two pull out wings on the side, as well as to side storage areas I did not include on mine. The plans aslo have a lift off top box that I will probably build someday. I think I spent around 180, but wish I had spent a bit more on good slides, but I bought all I could find local, a did not want to wait for mailorder. How it compares to metal for size and duribility I don't know, I just did not want to spend more money on a metal box, I like having a wood box for my woodworking tools, it was a fun project, and the first time I got to build drawers. I was glad to learn on something for my shop that did not have to be cabnet grade!
